What is bespoke art?

Writer: Alison KenyonAlison Kenyon

Why would I choose it over an off-the-wall gallery piece?

Imagine walking into your living room every day and feeling your heart swell with a sense of connection. The flow, the furnishings, the colors, the lighting... you hired a designer who knew how to create your space to align with your unique aesthetic, personality, and lifestyle. And the art on your wall was created just for you, too. It sings in harmony with the rest of the room, and it's it's truly a piece of you. That’s the magic of bespoke art.

But what does "bespoke" really mean? And why would someone choose it over buying a print or picking up a ready-made piece from a gallery?

The answer lies in its soul.

Bespoke art is more than just custom-made; it isn't just an object. It’s deeply personal; reflecting your individuality, your journey, and your essence in a way that nothing off the shelf ever could. It's one-of-a-kind, just for you, and created out of true collaboration.

The experience of commissioning a piece of bespoke art should feel effortless when you’re working with the right artist.

For me, as it should with any artist, it all starts with a conversation. Ideally we can meet IN your space, to get a first-hand feel. The boring part is taking measurements and photos of the area where you want to display the artwork. The juicy bit is when you start talking about your home, your story, and what inspires you. Don’t worry if you’re unsure about what you want— a good artist is there to help you discover it. The goal is to keep you talking- taking the scenic route through your thoughts; past the initial stuffy nuts and bolts questions and into the deeper territory of your psyche. This is where the real inspiration comes! We usually end up somewhere completely different than where we thought we were going- and that's when you've struck gold.

From there, your artist should send detailed sketches for you to review. With the photos and measurements of your space, a good artist will deliver room mock-ups so you can view the concept sketches the way they would actually look in your home. This is a partnership, and your feedback is key. Together, refine the vision until it feels perfect.

Once the design hits that perfect resonance with you, an artist can just... create.

When I'm creating art for a client, and we've hit that sweet spot of co-creation, the muse flows through me, and I'm just the vessel. All you have to do is watch your vision come to life- I like to send over little clips of video of the work in progress (unless you want it to be a surprise)

From the initial brush strokes to the final installation, the process is effortless on your end. If you're more than a few hours' drive for me, I'll have the piece shipped - well packed and insured. If I can get to you in my car, I'll deliver the piece in person- that way I get to see the smile on your face first hand!

After the initial consultation and design approval, your time commitment is minimal. With the right artist on your team, you should never be left guessing or overwhelmed. The whole process should fit effortlessly into your life. You should have your bespoke masterpiece hanging on your wall within 4 weeks!

In a world of mass production, bespoke art is a statement. It says, “I value craftsmanship, creativity, and individuality.” It’s a way to stand out, to connect, and to create a space that feels undeniably yours.

Working with Alison Kenyon on the mural for Sierra Academy was such an enjoyable experience. Alison brought immense talent, creativity, and dedication to this project. She grasped the school’s core values and transformed them into a visual narrative that perfectly reflects our culture and mission.

Beautiful "Isis" brings intense beauty and grace to my home.

In the right light, she literally glows.

A beautiful painting that exudes intense beauty and strength from the canvas into my space.

It was a joy to work with Alison in creating the mural in our treatment area- from design concept to installation, the whole process was a breeze.  She really listened to my vision and made it a reality!  The best part

is that the finished mural brings smiles to the faces of staff and patients

every single day.
